A DAY OF WOOD TURNING AND VESSEL MAKING ON FOURTH STREET... WITH MASTER TURNER, JOHN COBB
EACH of artisan John Cobb’s bowls is a unique work of art. Walnut, camphor, maple burl, madrone, liquid ambar, elm and olive are just some of the found wood types that are transformed on John’s lathe.
Natural cracks in the wood’s surfaces are filled with food-safe brass so the bowls can be used and enjoyed for years to come. Each finished bowl is signed by the artist, in addition, he notes the type of wood used and the location where it was originally found.
John also demonstrated the creation of ebonized redwood vessels from reclaimed redwood found in the bay area. These vessels are turned on the lathe and then torched in the japanese shou sugi ban wood finishing method.
EACH OF ARTISAN JOHN COBB’S BOWLS IS A UNIQUE WORK OF ART. WALNUT, CAMPHOR, MAPLE BURL, MADRONE, LIQUID AMBAR, ELM AND OLIVE ARE JUST SOME OF THE FOUND WOOD TYPES THAT ARE TRANSFORMED ON JOHN’S LATHE.
All of the sourced wood comes from stumps reclaimed from arborist wood piles. These once spectacular trees were removed for disease or safety concerns and headed for the landfill or fireplace.
John climbs through arborist piles throughout the Bay Area searching for logs that have incredible potential hidden beneath the bark. Returning to the shop with one piece or a trailer load, John chainsaws each log into approximate shape and then mounts the blank on a lathe for turning.
It was a day of truly observing the botanical bounty found outdoors in nature and capturing that moment of beauty to admire indoors.

A Day of Foraging... a note from Alta
We had a terrific time this past Saturday afternoon in our Healdsburg gardens with Sarah Lonsdale, co-author of Foraged Flora, and Dundee Butcher of Russian River Flower School.
It was a day of truly observing the botanical bounty found outdoors in nature and capturing that moment of beauty to admire indoors.
Foraged Flora is not only a beautifully photographed book, it's also a great read. The stories that the authors write about the people that they've worked with are fascinating. Foraged Flora is a very clear argument for gleaning and foraging close to home.
